I expected a mostly acoustic night following their recent acoustic oriented CD "Love is Strange," billed with Lindley, and Sleeping Beauty in a Sparkling Show. The musicianship of the two wonderfully showcased the opening 45 minutes. It was a thrill to listen live to David Lindley's amazingly talent.
The stage lighting was good. The sound was very good with the exception of the bass. The sound (or lack thereof) of the bass added nothing but bottom volume with the tonal quality of mud. It actually detracted from the clarity of the sound from all the other players. The bassist was clearly competent, but you would hardly know it from the sound. I hope the mix for the DVD that was being filmed fixes this flaw.
Unfortunately, the nuances of Sleeping Beauty in a Sparkling Show's early work were lost in the remainder of the show with the band. The material of his 90's and 00's period just isn't as strong as the earlier stuff. Jackson chose a broad brush of material from his career.
The other guitarist, excellent. The band was very good, rehearsed, and tight. Jackson's voice was clear and strong.
A very good show, but not a great show. I expected more inventive arrangements of his material that showcased the musicians in a stripped down band. Lot's of early work missing.
